They were doing this through our online Learning Management System called Schoology. I asked them what they thought about Schoology and the portfolios they were developing and planned to share at their IEMs. The students explained that the first time they took part in an IEM they were quite nervous and unsure about the process but now (as they have done these a few times) they are very comfortable and believe it is a great way to share their learning - “it is better because we can demonstrate and show what we have learnt and the fun we had”. They find it very enjoyable being included as part of the process and preferred this approach.

They also agreed that Schoology was a great way to share this learning as it helped them to stay organised as they could quickly check their grades, feedback and see how they were tracking overall. They also thought it was great as their parents could quickly see how they were getting on and liked sharing their learning with them in this way. The students have also enjoyed using the Google Apps for Education suite of applications (such as Docs and Slideshows) and they mentioned “once you get the hang of it, the tools are really easy to use”.

It was awesome to hear what a positive experience these students were having with regards to reflecting and sharing their learning using our digital tools effectively. We hope you enjoy your children's IEMs and wish you and your whānau a fantastic Christmas and New Year. Stay safe and take care.

Digital Citizenship - Online Safety for Parents

Young people are spending more and more time online so it is very important for the adults in their lives to teach them how to stay safe. What kinds of posts do you share? Do you manage your privacy settings and security well?Teach them the basics - Including strong passwords, protecting personal information etc.Setting up Social Media - setup your own child’s accounts and use your own email depending on their etc.Give them the tools they need - Check out the safety centres for sites and apps that they use, show them how to block people, report content and use the privacy settings.Online Bullying - One in five young people in NZ have be the target of online bullying. Make sure you talk about how you expect them to behave online and what to do if they are targeted online. Lead by example and encourage them to think about the other person. Remind them that if it is not OK in person then it is not OK online.Sharing Personal Information - Talk with your young people about the risks of sharing personal information and images and what can happen once they are created and shared. What if something happens? - Remain calm and talk through the options such as talking with a trusted adult, school or Netsafe. Try not to over react and take away the technology otherwise they may not come to you next time. Focus on fixing the issue not punishing or removing their devices.

If you would like to know more about specific technology young people are using you can browse through this great ‘Staying Safe’ guide from Ne
tsafe. Some popular ones that we use at school are:

Schoology CalendarGoogle Docs and SpreadsheetsGoogle GmailGoogle KeepGoogle TasksGoogle CalendarGoogle DriveTrello

In your daily routine and at your places of work you might use project management software or other tools such as GANTT charts etc to manage projects. It would be great if you could share some of your own tips and tricks with your kids that you use to stay organised. How do you organise the weekly family routines? Kanbans can be a great way to organise kids jobs to be done as this video explains. Kanbans are basically 3 lists with sticky notes of tasks to do. First they are tasks that need ‘to be done’, then one is selected to work on and can be moved into the ‘doing’ column. Once the job is completed it is moved into the final ‘done’ column. It is a simple, visible and effective way to manage tasks that need to be completed.

Managing and sharing information is an area that our students are learning to deal with effectively. It is important to continue to have discussions with our young people about the types of information they are accessing, storing and sharing. Are our young people really aware of the full impact and implications of using social media apps and how their choices about what and how they share information truly affects others? Research has shown that ‘cognitive’ and ‘affective’ empathy are still developing during the teenage years. Cognitive empathy is the ability to think about things from someone else’s point of view (perspective-taking). Affective empathy is the ability to recognise and respond to other people's feelings appropriately.

We can support our young people to be more consciously aware of developing these skills by:

Discussing current events/TV shows/movies and how the different people involved might be thinking and feeling.Role modelling and sharing your own thoughts and feelings about situations and the different perspectives involved.Helping them to problem solve by asking them how they would feel in a particular situation and actively exploring someone else’s point of view.

Our young people are starting to develop empathy and compassion and although they might be able to theoretically put themselves into someone else’s shoes it might be difficult for them to act on this particularly in group situations. Empathy is an important disposition that fits in well with the ‘K - kindness and respect’ part of our CLOAK and learning experiences here at RJHS.

Digital Citizenship Celebration

Digital Citizenship - Term 3 CelebrationThis term at RJHS our Learning Advisory curriculum was updated and streamlined to cover the following three key strands: Social and Emotional - Students will, develop Digital Citizenship skills and be able to explain key aspects leading to them having a positive Impact on Others and Society Whanaungatanga - Students will develop a sense of belonging and connectedness, to build a strong school culture. Mindfulness helps put things into perspective without judgement and becoming caught up in our worries.

I use the ‘Headspace’ app which I enjoy, there are some great animations (like this video about changing your perspective) that provide simple reminders about how to stay grounded in the present moment. Reminders also pop up on my phone that help me to redirect my focus back to my wellbeing and taking time out to recharge my batteries.

Mindfulness can take many forms, it could be as simple as taking 10 minutes a day to be unplugged and enjoy the present moment without distractions, simply breathing and relaxing the body. Deep breaths can lower the heart rate and help to reduce anxiety.

We hope you might be able to find some moments to talk with the young people in your lives and your wider whanau about the benefits of being mindful and how you might support each other to make the most of each day and enjoy the present moment.

“Surrender to what is. Advisories will be investigating how our communication affects ourselves, others and our wider community.

Our learners are dealing with many issues that their parents did not have to deal with themselves when growing up such as cyber bullying, inappropriate sharing of personal photos and videos, doxxing, and catfishing. It is really important that we and our learners understand what is involved in being a digital citizen who contributes to society and online communities in a positive manner and is aware of how to make appropriate choices in behavior and communication.

The CLOAK focus for this term is ‘O’ which stands for ‘Ourselves as Learners’. We all have a lot to learn about appropriate communication and the impact of the choices we make. As adults and caregivers we are the role models for appropriate online communication and many times as part of online social media communities I have come across negative and harmful comments. The THINK acronym can be a great reminder to stop and evaluate what you might be about to say, post or text:

T - Is it true?

H - Is it helpful?

I - Is it inspiring or does it improve the situation?

N - Is it necessary, or is it better left unsaid?

K - Is it kind, what is your motivation for saying/texting this?

We encourage you to continue to have discussions with your family about communication and how tricky it can be when we use devices. The message that is intended might be quite different to how it might be received. When we communicate in a digital format we can’t see the person and read their body language, therefore miscommunication can easily occur.

Albert Mehrabian came up with the 7-38-55 rule of personal communication. His studies suggested that we tend to work out our feelings, attitudes, and beliefs not by the actual words spoken (7%), but by the speaker’s tone of voice (38%) and body language (55%). Also if words and body language seem to contradict one another, we tend to believe the body language. So it is an important reminder that ‘how’ we say something is probably even more important than the words themselves. We do not have the non-verbal cues when communicating in a digital manner.

Our learners are also often still working out the difference between batter and bullying. Here are some tips from Netsafe that you could discuss with your whanau:

Is there only one person in on the joke?Is the joke embarrassing, insulting or shaming towards another person? Is the joke about someone’s gender, religion, sexuality, race, ethnicity, disability or other sensitive aspect of a person’s identity?Has the person let you know (or is acting like) they don’t like it?

You can also check out some other useful articles from Netsafe:

https://www.netsafe.org.nz/banter-vs-bullying/https://www.netsafe.org.nz/sexting/https://www.netsafe.org.nz/hdc-act/https://www.netsafe.org.nz/parents-bullying/

Digital Citizenship - Kia Kaha Te Reo Māori!

We are currently celebrating Matariki the Māori New Year and this week we are also celebrating all languages, so it is a fantastic time to explore some relevant digital language development tools and resources. The Waikato Regional Council has created a free App called Kawe Kōrero that you can download onto your phone to help you grow your Māori language skills and protocol knowledge. There are some great interactive tools to help you pronounce words, phrases and place names correctly. Another alternative is to use an online tool such as Māori Type It. Different tribes celebrate Matariki at different times. To some tribes the new year in mid-winter is signalled by the dawn rising of Matariki (the Pleiades cluster of stars), while to others it is the rising of Puanga (Rigel in Orion - the brightest star in Orion). For many iwi the appearance of Puanga in the night sky signals the start of winter. Puanga was said to be one of the parents of the climbing plant puawānanga. The Sign Language Dictionary is another great resource that includes short demonstration videos about how to sign particular words. Sign Ninja is an awesome game, NZSL vocabulary and knowledge is used to unlock doors, earn points, “Thumbs Up” tokens or “Voice Off Shields” along the way. Meanwhile the player will have to face the “Shouters”, noisy characters who don’t know how to use NZSL and are so loud that they are causing the walls of the labyrinth to collapse! Upon reaching the Great Hall of Communication, players will be awarded belts in a variety of colours to reflect their level of achievement.

We hope you have some fun exploring and expanding your communication skills using these great digital tools. This access provides huge opportunities in terms of education, communication and entertainment. However, we also know that parents and teachers are concerned about the content of what our young people are viewing online, and while gaming and communicating with others. Does your child play the game Fortnite or watch the Series ‘13 Reasons Why’? The Office of Film and Literature Classifications has recently released a Guide for Parents. This guide includes tips for talking with our young people about what they are watching.

At RHS the ‘O’ part of our CLOAK values is all about knowing ‘Ourselves as Learners’, this includes understanding how our learning impacts our lives. What our learners are watching and engaging with will influence and shape them as individuals. It is important for our young people to be critical thinkers and understand how media is consciously and subconsciously affecting their hauora, which comprises of physical, mental, emotional, social and spiritual well-being. This has been a big focus in term 1 and 2 of our Junior High School Health Curriculum.

Some tips from the guide:

Share and talk about entertainment media with your teen.Encourage them to think critically about what they view. Encourage them to see things from other people’s points of views and from other perspectives. Also ask them if they think the media is based on reality or is fictional.Talk about sensitive or complex issues.Support your young person if they’re distressed by something they’ve watched.

There has been much discussion about the TV Series ‘13 Reasons Why’ and the computer game called Fortnite. Fortnite is quickly becoming extremely popular and many of our students regularly play this game. It is addictive and comes with a PEGI rating of 12 years old due to ‘frequent scenes of mild violence’. There is also an online chat feature that cannot be turned off and Common Sense Media does not recommend games with open chat for kids under 13. You can find out more about this game in this Fortnite Parents Guide. Common Sense Media is a great place to start if you want to find out more about games and other media that our young people are using and watching.

Tim Elmore also suggests that parents monitor their children’s social media and provides some practical tips in his blog post. A recent PISA survey has found that New Zealand students have the second-highest rate of bullying in the OECD. So there is a very real and urgent need in NZ to effectively deal with these issues in our schools.

Netsafe reports that one in five young people in New Zealand have been the target of online bullying which can be hard to deal with for both the young people involved and parents. Online bullying can take on many forms such as name calling, unwanted online messages, spreading rumours or lies, fake accounts used to harass people, excluding people from social activities, embarrassing pictures, videos, websites or fake profiles.

Here are some tips for dealing with online bullying adapted from the Netsafe guides that you could discuss with your children:

Don’t respond.Don’t attack the person back.If it is safe try talking with the person privately.Talk to a trusted friend, family member or teacher.Save the messages and images for evidence if neededCut off the person bullying you - block their phone number or social media account.Report it if the bullying happened via social media.
The Harmful Digital Communications Act can also help you to deal with this.
Get help via Netsafe and your school.

There is more detailed information on the Netsafe website about how to deal with cyberbullying. One of the most effective ways to prevent bullying is to think of the whole group of young people in the school and use students to stop the bullying they see around them. So this week is a perfect opportunity to get involved as caregivers to discuss and role model how our young people might be able to prevent and deal with the impacts of bullying. It takes a village to raise a child and together as a school community we all have a part to play in taking responsibility and helping to build a culture of kindness and respect.

References

Netsafe - https://www.netsafe.org.nz/online-bullying/ & https://www.netsafe.org.nz/parents-bullying/

News Report - http://www.newshub.co.nz/home/new-zealand/2017/04/nz-second-worst-for-schoolyard-bullying-oecd-report.html

Digital Citizenship - Social Media Use

Have you ever wondered how much is too much social media use? One UNICEF study has found some use to be beneficial. However with too much time, screens can become damaging to our mental health. Teens spend on average 9 hours a day. Just two hours have been contributed to anxiety and unhappiness among teens. Tim Elmore recommends a 60-90 limit and the rest to be filled with face-to-face interactions. This ratio has been shown to produce happier kids, better students and more satisfied adults.

Some tips from Tim Elmore about how to approach these issues:

Start with some conversations about slow and steady changes around reducing time spent on social media.Research shows that 71% of teens admit to hiding what they are doing on social media so it is a good idea to monitor your child’s use of social media.According to one source 50% of teens say they are addicted to their cell phone and many parents feel their teen spends too much time on their phone. Maybe you could explore ways to help your children to regularly ‘unplug’.If you find yourself arguing with your child about their use of a portable device maybe a contract with some consequences around appropriate use could be explored.

At RJHS we have put in place many supports and initiatives to encourage the appropriate use of digital devices such as:

Managing our network environment which includes website filtering and security measures.Encouraging students to ‘unplug’ during break times and not use primary devices for extended periods of time.Learning about positive digital communications and appropriate use of devices through our Learning Advisory Curriculum.‘Attitude’ parent presentations to help parents cope with the ever changing dynamic of teenagers, device use and the social media environment.

Our learners are developing their self-management skills and are constantly learning and reflecting on the impact of their choices as digital citizens. As a parent, my husband and I have negotiated with our children to put in place some simple limits around device use to encourage positive behaviour, social skills and well-being. We would like to encourage you as caregivers to continue to have conversations around how to best support your children with their choices and use of devices and reflect on how it impacts on their health, well being and relationships.

Full article by Tim Elmore here for more tips and further information.

Important Information for School Processes

BUSIT Routes Message

We have received some important information from Waikato Regional Council about BUSIT bus routes to the school.
