Hukanui Marae Noho

This week two of our leadership groups - Manaaki Tauira and Student Ambassadors, spent two days at Hukanui Marae building their leadership skills and establishing their purpose within Rototuna High Schools. We were welcomed on the marae by kuia Hekeiterangi and kaumatua Wiremu and Ants.

The purpose of Manaaki Tauira is to build a visible Māori and Pasifika culture throughout the school. They bonded as a group on the marae in an effort to make planning and leadership of events and activities more effective. We spent time building connections with Ngāti Wairere and Hukanui Marae, and learnt more about the significant cultural history of Rototuna.

For the Student Ambassadors, the purpose of the noho was to understand that leadership begins with self-knowledge, that their leadership characteristics and traits can be developed, and that leadership is an act of service. We had a fantastic time, and feel like we achieved our goals.

We look forward to an ongoing relationship with Hukanui Marae and Ngāti Wairere.
