Life is about relationship. How we relate to other people is an important aspect of our lives.
Our school kaupapa is: Connect, Inspire, Soar - to empower our learners to be connected, collaborative, community-minded citizens, inspired to soar. Arts at Rototuna Junior High School draws from this kaupapa and seeks for students to understand their world and have the confidence, tools, skills, knowledge and ability to creatively speak to it (their world) through the use of the Arts.
Arts disciplines of Visual Art, Drama, Dance and Music foster these skills and the confidence for students to be able to share their thoughts and ideas with a wide range of people. Skills that are transferable into every aspect of life and how they relate to others.
Apart from our co-curriculum classes that encourage a challenging, yet supportive environment, we also offer Arts driven ‘Flight Times’ where students can choose from a variety of Visual Art, Dance, Drama and Music inspired learning - be it a dance troupe, production focussed drama, photography, or putting together their own bands. Along with this we offer ‘stretch’ Flight Times that prepare our students for future NCEA learning.
Outside of our class time, we offer opportunities to learn and build confidence through arts clubs, dance troupes, a vocal ensemble, orchestra, jazz band, Year 7/8 and 9/10 rock bands, and a percussion ensemble.
14 tutors from the Waikato Itinerant Music Scheme offer Ministry of Education funded musical instrument lessons in a wide range of instruments - vocals, guitar, bass guitar, drums, brass (trumpet, cornet etc), strings (violin, cello etc), and woodwind (incl. flute, clarinet and saxophone). Scientific studies show that learning a musical instrument benefits students’ brain development and transfers skills to many other areas of their lives.
During the year our students have opportunities to share their talents with our school and local community through competitions, festivals and exhibitions. Alongside this, we regularly have Arts inspired events and activities through our Advisory and Hapū programmes, often promoted and run by our hapū student arts leaders.
