Junior High

Rototuna High Junior High School is a place that is focused on engaging learners in Years 7 to 10 in positive learning experiences. Our learning programme has been designed to ensure that our ākonga (learners) are empowered and prepared for their future. We aim to provide authentic, relevant, real-life contexts that will develop enduring and deep understandings.

Our Curriculum

Our curriculum model is made up of three connected elements: Advisory, Learning Modules and Flight Times (Year 9 and 10 only).

This model offers each ākonga (learner) engaging learning opportunities to achieve academic and personal success. It provides a range of opportunities for authentic demonstration of learning, development of deep thinking and inquiry skills and tools for learning success.

At Rototuna Junior High School we place ākonga (learners) at the centre of their learning with our expert kaiako (teachers) challenging and supporting them to achieve to their full potential across all areas of the curriculum.

Personalising learning means we respond to the individual learning needs of your child and foster their personal interests and strengths. This also involves exposing them to a wide range of new learning experiences and opportunities that inspire new passions. This approach motivates and engages ākonga (learners) more deeply as they learn how they contribute to their own success.

Uniform

Our uniform is supplied by The U Shop

We strongly advise you visit The U Shop store to sample items before purchasing online.

Absence/Attendance

Please report all absences to the school (preferably before 8:30am on the day of the absence). Phone (07) 854 0541 and press 1 for Junior absentees, or email [email protected]

This also applies if your child is going to be late to school. They must sign in and out at Student Services so their arrival and departure are noted in KAMAR.

My child has an appointment during school time

If your child has an important appointment during class time please ensure you email your child’s advisor (the night before if possible) or send a signed note with your child so a ‘sign out’ pass can be issued. This needs to be done before the start of the school day.

Their LA will then provide them with an out of school pass to show their teachers when they need to leave class. The teacher will send the student to Student Services to sign out. For safety reasons we ask parents/caregivers to collect their child from the reception area.

Students will not be permitted to leave class without prior notification unless it is an exceptional circumstance.

I want to take my child on a holiday during Term

Whilst we acknowledge that some whānau/families plan their overseas travel / holidays during the school terms, as a school, we advise against it and to avoid this situation where at all possible as the Education Act does require children to attend school each day that it is open for tuition.

In the event of planned absence, we ask that you NOTIFY the school of your leave intentions by completing form below and contact your child's Learning Advisor as soon as possible to discuss a plan to support their learning and progress.

Leave of Absence Form (NOT to be used for daily absences)

School Fees

School Fees & Donations

We are operating as a cashless school with the following methods being available to pay school donations, EOTC (e.g. camps and outings offsite), course expenses and other school activity fees. Notices will be sent by staff members (mainly teachers) when required for school payments, with parents being able to view their statement of account at anytime through KINDO.

Donations (Tax Deductible):

$70 per term or $280 for the year. For those with two or more students at RJHS the donation is capped at $110 per family per term, or $440 for the year maximum for the donation.

$75 per year ICT contribution towards Educational Software (eg Education Perfect, Schoology, KAMAR, Adobe, JAMF, Writers Toolbox)

(Though these payments are not compulsory they are appreciated by the Board as they allow us to offer and provide teaching resources which may otherwise not be affordable by the school. Please see below for an explanation of Education Perfect & Writer's Toolbox.)

Voluntary Contributions:

$70 per semester - Foodtech (if Foodtech is taken as part of a module) (Not tax deductible)

$70 per semester - Production Design/Construction (if Product Design/Construction are taken as part of module) (Not tax deductible)

Urban/Local Bus Routes

There are a number of Waikato District Council bus services available in both the Flagstaff and Rototuna areas.

Here are direct links to information about the local bus services:

Note that the Rototuna and Flagstaff services list Rototuna High Schools specific routes. These only operate during term time.

Rural Bus Routes

For more information on rural bus routes, please click here - RURAL Buses

Office Drop Offs/Student Messages

If you drop off an item for your child e.g. forgotten lunch, PE gear etc please ensure you email your child directly to collect it from Reception.

Student email: (firstname)(lastname)@rhs.school.nz

As timetabled classes often move out of their designated area it is not practical for office staff to deliver goods or messages to students. Office staff can not guarantee that items will be received if students do not come and collect them.
