Pastoral Care

At Rototuna Junior High School, we are committed to providing an inclusive environment where our international students feel valued, respected, and supported. Our international students come all over the world. We celebrate and embrace diversity at our school. We also recognise that our international students face a variety of challenges as they are becoming familiar with a new school and are settling into a new country. We are here to offer guidance, support, and encouragement whenever needed. Quality pastoral care is an integral part of the international student experience.

Each student at RJHS is allocated an advisory class and an advisor. Our students stay with the same advisor for the duration of their time at RJHS. This ensures students are able to form a strong connection with their advisor and the other students in their advisory class.

We also have an International Student Director dedicated to helping our international students.

In case of an emergency, international students can call our 24/7 emergency contact number: Michael Tan (021 141 7836).

Kia ora!

As the International Student Director, I am here to support you throughout your time at our school. I will be your point of contact for any questions or concerns you may have, and I will work closely with you and your advisor to ensure that you have a successful and rewarding experience. On your first day, you will have an international student orientation. You will also have regular interviews with me so that I can check how you are settling in. If you need extra support with your English, you will be placed in one of our English Language Learning (ELL) classes. I am looking forward to meeting you!

ERO Report: Principal’s Message

We are thrilled to share the latest Education Review Office (ERO) School Evaluation Report for Rototuna Junior High School.

This report reflects the incredible dedication of our staff, students, and whānau in creating a learning environment where our young people can truly soar. The evaluation highlights the high levels of success and wellbeing our students experience, noting that "most students in Years 7 to 10 achieve at or above expected curriculum levels in reading, writing and mathematics" - an achievement category achieved by only 2 other state intermediate and secondary schools in Hamilton. ERO also commended our teaching staff, stating that "students benefit from high quality teaching practices and a rich and varied curriculum".

Reviews

  1. "Our child had a wonderful experience at Rototuna Junior High School. The teachers and staff were always supportive and caring, and the school provided a very welcoming environment for international students. In particular, the buddy system was extremely helpful, as it allowed new students to quickly adapt to school life and feel included. We truly appreciate the opportunities and experiences our child gained during the study period, which helped her grow both academically and personally." Yuan Min Li, Parent
  2. "Rototuna is a happy and friendly place for overseas students. Here my child will have a nice buddy that the school assigned, which helps him to be involved in study very quickly. Teachers and schoolmates are kind towards students making new friends. They respect our culture and nationality, which makes my child feel comfortable and focused on experiencing the different study environment. By the way - the haka is so attractive and amazing! We were all very impressed!" Nancy Nan, Parent
  3. "As an educational agency - Kiwi Walker International Limited - we have cherished an exceptionally pleasant partnership with RJHS. What makes this collaboration truly rewarding lies in the school’s commitment to supporting international students, especially those from China. The International department is always here to provide comprehensive support to our international students. Also, the school offers a nurturing academic environment - spacious classrooms, well-equipped labs, and nice study spaces that foster focus and curiosity. And international students would be accompanied by a buddy who would be the helper and friend at the school. This is the space that international short study tour students would like to come back to, because this school gives them not just the New Zealand education, but a unique, life-enriching experience. We are excited to keep this partnership and strive to send more outstanding Chinese students to RJHS, letting them benefit from all it has to offer." Lisa Liu, Education Agent
