At school, we regularly remind students about safe practices when walking, scootering, cycling, and travelling on buses. As many of our students travel independently to and from school, we ask parents and caregivers to remind them of some basic road safety principles, including:
Stop, look, and listen before crossing any road.
Never run across the road without checking carefully for traffic.
Use designated crossings wherever possible.
Stay alert and avoid distractions such as mobile phones or headphones when crossing roads.
Wear a properly fitted helmet when riding a bike or scooter.
Follow road rules and be aware of vehicles entering and leaving driveways.
We are particularly concerned about student safety when getting off buses. At times, students can be eager to get home and may step out from behind or in front of a bus and attempt to cross the road without properly checking for oncoming traffic. Buses can significantly reduce visibility for both students and drivers, making this a particularly high-risk situation.
Please remind your child that after getting off a bus, they should take the time to stop, check carefully in both directions, and only cross when it is safe to do so.
Road safety is a shared responsibility between school, students, and families. By working together and consistently reinforcing these messages, we can help ensure that every student arrives at school safely and returns home safely each day.
Thank you for your ongoing support in helping keep our young people safe.
