A sit down series.. Spotlight on Cameron Wallace

Date: 20 May 2024

Cameron, thanks for sitting down with us. You’ve had some awesome BMX results recently, can you let us know about some of your favourite ones?

So definitely Worlds, where I got to meet and talk to athletes from other countries.

Nationals was also interesting, as I crashed out and got a concussion, going handlebar to handlebar with another racer, and my front wheel just washed out from under me. But I had done enough to qualify for top 8 at Nationals, so I got to go to Worlds.

Tell us about your trip to the USA - other than BMX, what else did you do while you were there?

We went to Orlando in Florida. We went to Universal Studios - the Velocacoaster was definitely my fave. We didn’t get a lot of down time while we were there to do much else, but that was an awesome experience.

How long have you been doing BMX?

10 years now, I started when I was 4.

What made you get into BMX?

My brother started a year before me, and I really wanted to do it too, so I convinced my Dad.

How many hours of training do you have to do each week?

4 hours which includes club nights, and then I have to make up other sessions by myself.

I race for Hamilton BMX Club, and do most of my training there, but can also go to Cambridge if I need to.

Other than riding a BMX really fast, are there any awesome tricks you can do, or are trying to do?

Maybe a tire grab, which is where you grab your front tire in mid air while going over a jump. You have to hold the handlebars with one hand and reach forward and grab the tire with the other hand.

What’s your race number, did you get to choose it, and does it have any special meaning?

My race number is 175, it gets allocated to us, we don’t get to choose.

Do you compete in any other sports?

I play rugby for the RHS U15’s. I play wing and flanker.

How do you fit that in around your BMX racing?

I miss a couple of games during the season due to my BMXing but can otherwise play ok.

What is your ultimate dream in BMX - what would you like to achieve?

Definitely to win World’s. You get to wear a rainbow jersey for the whole racing year if you win Worlds.

What’s your favourite subject?

Social Science

Who is your biggest supporter that you’d like to give a shout out to?

My Mum, because she takes me to all the tracks and events.

If you could do one thing for your Mum to say thank you what would you do (money isn’t an issue)

Let her retire so she doesn’t have to work anymore.

What would you say to someone that is not sure if they would like sports?

Give it a chance, you can get to experience some really cool things, and meet some really cool people, and gain some really cool friends from it all.
