Starting in Whakahoro and ending at Pipiriki, the 88km journey tested the students risk management and organisational skills. The aakonga had to organise their own equipment each day, set up camp and design and cook their own meals.
Highlights of the trip included improving their confidence in canoeing, especially through grade 2 rapids, exploring new areas of the NZ backcountry and getting to know their classmates really well. The growth in all of the aakonga was clear to see and I am sure they will remember the trip for a very long time.
The trip ended with a beautiful karanga and karakia from local Iwi and a time to reflect on the impact the awa has had on their wellbeing.
Thank you to Karen and Kyla for their mahi on the trip and to Simon for being our knowledgeable guide. Thank you to WINTEC for the guidance for the trip and the use of their equipment.
