On Wednesday, the 17th of June, our group, Lorenzo, proudly representing the Future Horizons Puna Wānanga, embarked on a significant community initiative in partnership with the Buddhist Compassion Relief Tzu Chi Foundation (慈濟基金會).
Taking into account the Food Warriors Puna Wānanga group, which maintains its own distinct collaboration with the foundation, our group focused on a project dedicated to critical winter relief and facility restoration.
Founded in Taiwan in 1966 by Dharma Master Cheng Yen, the Buddhist Compassion Relief Tzu Chi Foundation is a global, volunteer-led humanitarian organisation that operates across five continents and has aided over 130 countries and counting. The foundation is dedicated to alleviating suffering and improving society through its “Four Major Missions”: Charity, Medicine, Education, and Humanistic Culture, alongside global disaster relief and environmental protection. Tzu Chi's work goes beyond donating supplies; it partners with community groups to reach out to and care for those in need. The primary objective centred on addressing the immediate seasonal needs of these individuals.
The day kicked off at 9:00 AM with the five RSHS students alongside Lili Tai, our Puna teacher, organising and effectively packaging 70 winter blankets for distribution to three distinct organisations, ensuring they receive essential warmth during the coldest months of the year. This included 30 blankets donated to Hamilton Migrant Services Trust, 20 blankets donated to Kids in Need Waikato, and 20 blankets donated to the Māori Women’s Welfare League.
Following the success of the donation drive, the team pivoted straight to a new initiative: a comprehensive garage restoration to support the foundation's infrastructure. They undertook a complete overhaul of Tzu Chi’s storage garage, systematically removing all materials, identifying and discarding obsolete items, and cleaning the physical space. Furthermore, old chairs were refurbished, items were brushed thoroughly, and new glass tables were constructed from the ground up to be reinstated and organised back into the garage. As a result of this restoration, suitable recovered items have been identified for donation to primary schools that can make use of them, ensuring that reusable resources are recycled and unnecessary wastage is avoided. This initiative will form the team's next follow-up project.
This initiative showcases the diverse ways in which student groups are not limited to engaging with humanitarian organisations at a global scale to drive meaningful change. Through this project, Lorenzo demonstrated practical service and hands-on care to promote dignity to the needy through Tzu Chi.
Moving forward, Lorenzo remains committed to fostering this relationship with the Tzu Chi Foundation, utilising targeted community service to create a sustainable and compassionate impact on projects yet to come.
