Hunchback of Notre Dame

Date: 13 Aug 2024

Since the beginning of the year, the Talent/Perform Puna Wānanga group has been working alongside Renate O’Sullivan to begin to construct some costume (and props) pieces for the Hamilton Operatic Society’s production of ‘The Hunchback of Notre Dame’, which was on at Clarence St Theatre (from 27th July-10th August). This is the society’s 120th year anniversary - and they are the oldest theatre continuous theatre company in NZ!

For Hunchback, Renate took on the role of Costume Designer and Coordinator, and found the process incredibly rewarding and eye opening as she learnt alongside the production designer John Harding - a well known designer in NZ who has worked on many live productions and film and TV work including Avatar, The Lord of the Rings series and more.

This connection into the industry for my ākonga was really significant - being able to see their work onstage in a full musical production, with a live orchestra, gave them new insight into working in the performing arts industry and the different roles that are out there. I cannot wait to see how they apply this to our RSHS 2025 Production!!”
