On the 23rd of July, the Model United Nations Puna Wānanga group took a trip to the Hamilton High Court, where we were warmly welcomed by Nana Matenga, the Court Registrar. Nana went above and beyond to make us feel at home, starting with an engaging discussion about how New Zealand’s courts work, the different roles of the people within them, and how each part fits together to ensure justice is served.
From discovering the responsibilities of judges and lawyers to exploring the layout of a courtroom and the flow of a trial, the session gave us a real insider’s view of the justice system, and a chance to see law in action beyond what we debate in MUN.
We’re already looking forward to organising more opportunities for our students to experience the world of law, politics, and governance. Whether it’s visiting more courts and government buildings, or attending and hosting other Model UN events across the region, our group is excited to keep broadening our horizons and bringing learning to life beyond the classroom.
