What Are Your Names: Tom Hepburn & Ryan Wilson

Puna Wānanga Area/Class: OUTPOST with James Pinkerton

What your project is about:

Our project is about impacting the community in a positive way through cycling. We wanted to raise safety awareness in regards to cycling in and around the Rototuna and wider Hamilton area. We thought the best way to do this was to organise and run an event with stalls for people to learn all about cycling and how to do so safely. We partnered up with Hamilton City Council and this past Sunday, the 22nd September, we had our event at Rototuna Senior High School which was a success.

Future plans:

The future plan for our project is to expand our 'Cycle Safe' idea and to make this event bigger and better next year. We will possibly also host it multiple times throughout the year and partner with other community days to help and raise awareness for cycling safety.

What has been the highlight of your learning in Puna Wānanga so far?

A highlight for us and our Puna project was to see the hard work that we had done throughout the year come together in a successful way. We enjoyed being able to work together with the Hamilton City Council throughout the year and to finally see our vision become a reality was really cool to see and be a part of.

THREE skills you have developed through being involved in your project:

Whakaaro Taatati/Critical Thinking

We used Whakaaro Taatati (Critical Thinking) for our puna project to get our day together and make it a success. We needed to analyse what areas of cycling we wanted to focus on, and ask the question of how we could improve cycling safety in our local area.

Mahi Ngaatahi /Collaboration

We had to use Mahi Ngaatahi (Collaboration) for this day. Once we had partnered with the Hamilton City Council, we had to take shared responsibility for this day and divide the things needed to make it a success evenly between the two parties. We had to also communicate our ideas across which prompted a few visits to the council itself to organise this day.

Whakahaere Kaupapa/Project Management

We also had to use Whakahaere Kaupapa (Project Management) for our puna project Cycle Safe to make our community day a success. We had a target and we wanted to achieve these goals by a certain date. We also had to adapt to changes that might come our way such as the weather, but it held and we were able to produce a good end result for our year's work.
