Project Name: FAST (First Aid Student Training)
Group Members: Sophie Booker, Mackenzie Cooke, Sasha Haywood, Rachel Wu, Nilasha Ready, Mikaylah Wright and Hannah Rogers
Puna Wānanga Class: Local Guardians with Abbie Watson
What the project is about:
Our group of seven decided that in our puna, we wanted to explore an area that held meaning for us. We narrowed it down to first aid training for students. We aim to raise awareness about first aid and emergencies, and we believe that basic first aid training is an essential life skill, regardless of age. It can help young people recognise when a situation is risky or unsafe. We want young children to be able to feel more confident and skilled in emergencies, which starts with basic first aid training.
The future plans of the project:
We want to go into different schools across Hamilton, sharing skills and bringing awareness, and we want to create a lesson plan that we can use to teach the students at the schools we go to. This could involve first aid learning games, practicals, and resources that students can take with them to share with their families.
Highlight of our learning in Puna Wānanga so far:
Seeing our plan go as we imagined it, seeing the support come from our teachers and our peers, being trained in first aid (becoming qualified), and making our shirts and badges.
THREE skills you have developed through being involved in your project:
Whakaaro Taatari - Critical Thinking
Analysing, evaluating, being curious, asking critical questions, seeking different perspectives.
Coming up with a plan of action and organising it
Working around barriers we faced (not being able to teach certain things without real qualifications)
Mahi Ngaatahi - Collaboration
Taking shared responsibility for something, working together as a team, resolving conflict.
Working with teachers - Verity, Nat, Abbie
Hopefully future partnering
Whakahaere Kaupapa - Project Management
Managing goals and time, adapting to change, producing results.
Figuring out logistics of the project
Going through the process of getting logos, tshirts, first aid
