Student: Ella Malal
Project Name: Goldsmiths Gallery
Puna Wānanga Area: Internship - Pathways
What your project is about:
My project focuses on the management and marketing aspects of Goldsmiths Gallery. My responsibilities include creating newsletters, taking photographs, managing social media marketing, engaging with customers, and attending meetings with suppliers.
Future plans:
This work experience has given me valuable insight into the 'behind-the-scenes' operations of a business. It has highlighted the essential life experiences and subjects I need to pursue to excel in the business field in the future.
What has been the highlight of your learning in Puna Wānanga so far?
Engaging in conversations with customers and suppliers has been a significant highlight. These interactions have provided me with a deeper understanding of various career aspects that are usually hidden. Additionally, I enjoy the creative freedom I have in social media marketing, allowing me to express my creativity while learning practical skills.
THREE skills I have developed through being involved in your project:
Whakawhiti Whakaaro/Communication
Verbal, written and nonverbal: communicating ideas, listening, speaking and empathising.
When I started my work experience, I brought my ability to communicate and showcase our workplace to the world. While everyone has their main role, mine focuses on marketing and communications. Alongside editing, taking photographs, handling courier packages, and engaging with customers. A task that would be particularly challenging for the team to take over is managing our TikTok and social media marketing. I bring a fresh, younger-generation perspective to our workplace, helping to direct our content to appeal to younger audiences. This role requires me to effectively communicate ideas, listen to our audience, and seek feedback from friends and other school students.
Whakaaro Taatari/Critical Thinking
Analysing, evaluating, being curious, asking critical questions, seeking different perspectives.
Working on social media marketing during my work experience has significantly strengthened my ability to observe and analyse data. I have started researching ways to make videos more interactive and engaging for viewers. By assessing which types of content resonate most with our audience and understanding why certain posts perform better than others, I can create more effective future posts. This involves evaluating viewer data and identifying trends. I also apply knowledge from my DVC class to target specific audiences with my content. My highest viewed video has reached over 3,000 views, demonstrating progress, though I know I still have much to learn.
Whakahaere Kaupapa/Project Management
Managing goals and time, adapting to change, producing results.
I work on many short-term projects around the store, one of them being my 'Day in a Life' video, and others targeted towards customers with step-by-step explanations of how we make their products. Using tricks I've learned online, I've been able to create and adjust these videos to keep the customer engaged the entire time. I've learned to organize my time for these projects, leaving the voiceovers and final edits for when I get home and it's quieter. So far, I've created five of these short projects to showcase the workplace, and they have turned out amazing. I also plan to take all the photos and videos at the end of the year to showcase my entire year of work experience.
