Puna Wānanga / Impact & Innovation Spotlight

Date: 30 Jun 2026

As we wrap up another big term in Puna Wānanga, the Pouarataki team would like to say a huge thank you to our kaiako and community partners, whose time and expertise made these experiences possible for our learners. This week's Spotlight focuses on Impact and Innovation.

Nerd Corp is a legacy project, focusing on refurbishing donated laptops for use by students. Trained by the Nationwide RAD group, the current RSHS members are Harrison Connolly, Aaren Dodd, Lennox Long, Rhys Sterling, Kaiden Walters, Luca Pavolovich, Samuel Rattray, and Juan Lawrence.

This year, Nerd Corp has so far fixed 62 laptops, and they currently have a shipment of 15 ready to be worked on. Harrison explains, “We have a refurbishment log in which we log in new laptops and note where they go. Once they have been fixed up, the laptops are sent to the SLT office for them to distribute to students”.

The group is extremely self-managing, making use of a task sheet that members of the group will fulfill throughout the year. A big thanks for all your work!

Stairclimbing Robo Vac is led by Cooper Ellis and Cooper Lemon, two students looking at designing attachments for Robo Vacs, in particular, how to allow it to climb up stairs. Cooper explains, “ At the moment, we are focusing on the idea of attaching deployable legs, as this could allow it to clean the stairs as it climbs. Using Fusion, we can model the design, as well as test the constraints, eventually leading to a model that can be 3D printed”.

We look forward to seeing the continued growth, innovation, and positive impact that emerges from Puna Wānanga next term, as students work towards our final Expo for the year, in Week 10, Term Three.
