Puna Wānanga - Mini Expo

Date: 5 Jun 2025

Last week, our school vibrated with energy and excitement as we hosted our first Puna Wānanga Expo, a fantastic showcase of student-led project learning and a bustling market day. It was truly inspiring to witness the culmination of weeks of hard work, creativity, and entrepreneurial spirit from our talented students.

The Puna Wānanga initiative, deeply rooted in the powerful design thinking process, has empowered many students to identify real-world problems, brainstorm innovative solutions, and develop tangible projects. The Expo served as a magnificent platform for them to share their learning journeys, insights, and developments with fellow students and the school community.

Walking through the expo, it was evident that every project told a unique story. From sustainable eco-solutions to ingenious technological advancements, and from community-focused initiatives to artistic expressions, the diversity and depth of student learning were truly remarkable. Students confidently presented their projects, articulating the challenges they faced, the design thinking stages they navigated (discovery, defining, ideating and in some cases developing, implementing and even evolving), and the valuable lessons they learned along the way. Their passion and understanding of their chosen topics shone through in every explanation.

A particularly exciting aspect of the Puna Wānanga Expo was the vibrant market day. This innovative addition allowed students to put their entrepreneurial skills to the test by selling products they had developed to sustain their projects or simply to advertise their initiatives. The buzz was incredible, with students hawking their wares and engaging with customers – all valuable real-world experiences. From delicious baked goods and handmade crafts to unique services, the market was a testament to the students' creativity and business acumen. It was fantastic to see them apply their learning in such a practical and engaging way.

The Puna Wānanga Expo was more than just an exhibition; it was a testament to the power of student-centred learning, critical thinking, and collaborative problem-solving. It highlighted how equipping students with the design thinking framework can foster incredible innovation and empower them to become proactive changemakers. The market day component further underscored the importance of practical skills, financial literacy, and the ability to bring ideas to fruition.

A huge congratulations to all the students who participated! Your dedication, creativity, and entrepreneurial spirit are truly commendable. We also extend our sincere thanks to the teachers and staff who are guiding and supporting our students throughout their project learning journeys.

The success of this year's Mini Expo leaves us eagerly anticipating what incredible innovations and entrepreneurial ventures our students will bring to the next Puna Wānanga showcase! Watch this space!
