Puna Wānanga - Project Spotlight

Date: 6 May 2025

Project Name: Fuel Up

Group Members: Shirel Chandra, Emilie Bell and Finn Hart

Puna Wānanga class: Global Health Crisis with Shona Thorpe & Kyla Butcher

What is the project about? We are aiming to work with Woodstock Primary School to donate around 20 lunches to children who aren't able to bring decent lunches to school each day. Supplied school lunches can be quite unappealing for children, which is why we want to help out where we can and provide kids with a healthy and nutritious meal, so they can learn at their full capacity.

Future plans: When we created this project, we aimed to help those in need, and we want our project to inspire others to do the same. Whether it's a small or large donation, anything can be useful to those who are struggling.

Highlight of your learning in Puna Wānanga so far? Being able to gain experience by visiting other schools, reaching out to community companies, and learning good business skills has been a trying, yet eye-opening experience. As a group, we have learnt so much and had fun while doing it. Having the opportunity to take trips outside of the school to work with donating to Woodstock Primary has been our highlight.

THREE skills developed through being involved in your project:

Whakawhiti Whakaaro: (Communication)

A plan like ours needs a lot of planning, so the three of us have learned to communicate and negotiate depending on what the children of Woodstock Primary need. We have had many meetings with the members of Tuna Tank to discuss improvements and open us up to new ideas.

Whakahaere Kaupapa: (Project management)We want to produce at least 20 meals each week, our time management needs to be on point. We need to adapt to everybody's schedules, to have our food delivered at the preferred time of Woodstock Primary.

Whakaaro Manaaki: (Caring Thinking) No matter what challenges have been thrown at us, we want to stick to our goal, which is helping children in need, and helping out busy families, because this has become a huge issue for families due to inflation, and we want to ensure that kids are getting as many nutrients as they can, so they can focus on their learning.

How you can support us:

  • Donate excess fruit and vegetables.

  • Partner with us to be able to support this school and perhaps run this programme in other local schools.
