The event provided a platform for students to present their design thinking learning to friends and family, demonstrating the depth and breadth of what they have been achieving during our Wednesday curriculum.
The evening began with an opening ceremony and performance by our kapa haka. This was followed by our guest speaker, Elna Fourie, from Wintec’s Design Factory NZ presenting about the design thinking process and its importance; “a mindset of combining creative and analytical thinking and applying it towards solving a specific problem.” Year 13 Finn Miller and Year 12 Jack Oliver, also shared their application of this process and what they have achieved (so far) by doing this. We also had Year 13 Lucas Ramirez-Baena perform from the VOICES Puna Wānanga, with the finale being the MUN Puna Wānanga celebrating cultural identity in our school through a runway of different cultural dress and a performance by Year 13 Theo Massett on his bass guitar from the Live Puna Wānanga.
Following these proceedings, there was exposure to a myriad of presentations and expo displays. These ranged from captivating cultural clothing designs in 'Culture' to thought-provoking innovation to help those in learning spaces with sensory needs in 'Ecoproduct'; with each Puna Wānanga offering a unique perspective and valuable insight into the ways our students are utilising the design thinking process to help solve and explore areas of interest.
Thank you to all our students who participated and truly demonstrated how they are walking strong in the world to better and build community; and to our community and whānau, thank you for coming to see the amazing projects our learners can and are involved in.
