There is something truly special happening in Puna Wānanga’s Māra Kai project, and much of its success comes from the passion, dedication, and encouragement of teacher Yvonne Townsend. Through hands-on learning, teamwork, and strong community connections, students are developing skills that go far beyond the classroom.
Yvonne says one of the most rewarding parts of teaching Puna Wānanga is the strong connections she builds with both students and the wider community. She loves watching students step up, organise themselves, and take ownership of their learning and projects. Time and time again, students surprise her with what they can achieve when given the opportunity to lead a project.
“What I love most is seeing the passion students have for the world around them,” Yvonne shares. “Watching students grow from Year 11 through to Year 13 is amazing. They arrive a little unsure, and over time become organised, enthusiastic young people who are willing to take on challenges and work hard to achieve their goals.”
One of the biggest strengths of a legacy project is the opportunity to see students grow over several years. Yvonne has witnessed significant growth in students' confidence and independence, with students learning to think critically, solve problems, and communicate effectively within both the school and the wider community.
The Māra Kai programme has also built strong partnerships with Kura Kai, helping students make a real difference through food support initiatives. Kura Kai makes and distributes food to alleviate food insecurity in our communities. Community support continues to play an important role, and donations of food or financial contributions are always appreciated to help the programme continue to thrive.
An exciting project currently gaining momentum is the Kura Kai student leadership group, led by ambassador Catherine MacKenzie alongside students Blair Wang, Ryan Ret, Tasmyn Marcroft, and Arya Bom. Together, they are helping drive the initiative forward and creating meaningful change within the school community.
Puna Wānanga continues to inspire students to grow, lead, and give back - planting seeds today for a brighter tomorrow.
