Safety Reminder from Hamilton City Council

Date: 30 Jun 2026

We’ve seen more students riding bikes and e‑scooters to school, which is awesome — but we’ve also seen more close calls. The biggest problem has been riders travelling against the flow of traffic on the road in cycle lanes.

To keep yourself safe, always ride in the same direction as the cars. When drivers turn left out of driveways or side streets, they usually look to their right for oncoming traffic. If you’re coming from the opposite direction, they often won’t see you until it’s too late.

If there’s a short section where crossing the road to stay with traffic doesn’t make sense, it’s safer to hop onto the footpath for that part.

Make smart choices, stay visible, and ride with the flow of traffic every day. Your safety matters.
