Service Academy

Date: 21 May 2024

The walking tour commenced with a visit to one of two ANZAC class frigates, HMNZS Te Kaha and HMNZS Te Mana. The Service Academy class stood tall and proud onboard HMNZS Te Kaha, a primary combat-capable ship of the Navy that plays a pivotal role in safeguarding New Zealand, its exports, maritime resources and those of our allies.

The students engaged with various trades personnel and gained insight into various roles within the Royal New Zealand Navy. There was a keen interest displayed by the students when members of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Navy Diving Squad presented some of the advanced equipment utilized by the divers. A visit to the recruit training school provided them with an understanding of the daily experiences of recruits during their basic training.

A notable highlight of the day was the lunch at the Vince McGlone Galley. Both students and staff members enjoyed a great three-course meal, courtesy of the RNZN. This was followed by a visit to the Gymnasium, equipped with state-of-the-art facilities utilized by RNZN personnel. The day concluded with a friendly game of dodgeball in the gymnasium hall against Fraser High School, who also participated in the Naval Base visit.

It was a day well-spent and is expected to have provided aspiring individuals, aiming for a career in the New Zealand Defence Force, with a more comprehensive understanding.
