The rich atmosphere buzzed with excitement as students absorbed the knowledge shared by those who serve their country. Next, the class ventured into the spacious Gymnasium, an impressive facility filled with state-of-the-art equipment that RNZN personnel utilize to maintain peak fitness. Petty Officer Texas, our enthusiastic local Regional Recruiting NCO who facilitated the visit, eagerly discussed the rigorous training recruits undergo while at the NZDF Training School, offering a glimpse into the disciplined lifestyle of naval life.

A significant highlight of the day unfolded when the Service Academy class sat down for lunch in the vibrant Vince McGlone Galley alongside NZDF personnel stationed at the base. The delicious meal, provided by the NZDF, fostered camaraderie and encouragement as the students connected with those serving in the military.

The day culminated in an exciting onboard visit to one of the two Offshore Patrol Vessels, HMNZS Wellington. This formidable vessel plays a crucial role in maritime patrols, working in tandem with the Royal New Zealand Air Force P-3K2 Orion maritime patrol aircraft as it surveys New Zealand’s Exclusive Economic Zone, the Southern Ocean, and the South Pacific.

As students toured the ship's galley and stood on the bridge, the thrill of sitting in the Captain’s chair, overlooking the mighty bow of HMNZS Wellington, was a moment of pure awe. As they stood tall and proud aboard this impressive vessel, the mana in their demeanor was unmistakable.

The students engaged in conversations with various trades personnel, each interaction deepening their understanding of the diverse roles within the Royal New Zealand Navy. This enriching and well-utilized day not only ignited aspirations but also provided the students with a comprehensive understanding of the pathways available for those who dream of a career in the New Zealand Defence Force.
