Student Scope - Issue Three

One of our wonderful Manukura, Amirah, was kind enough to share her insights into Spirit Week. Here’s how our question and answer session went…

Q: Why do we do Spirit Week?

A: Spirit Week has been a long standing tradition in Rototuna Senior High. It’s a great opportunity to SOAR and connect with others and ultimately it’s the best opportunity to strengthen and develop our school culture!

Q: What is your favourite part of Spirit Week?

A: Without a doubt, it would be the Iwi Games. It’s when I feel the most school culture and I love seeing students and teachers wearing their Iwi colours with pride and coming together to represent their Iwi. To be honest, I’m not the most athletic person but I still love participating because I love the competitive spirit!

Q: Do you have any interesting facts/personal stories to share about Spirit Week?

A: Back in my old school in the Philippines, we did something similar to spirit week. It was fun but there weren’t many opportunities to participate as it was more the teachers and DPs that planned it. There wasn’t a lot of student voice but that’s what makes us different! Our manukura work alongside the councils and SLT to get input and plan things from a students experience and perspective. Through that, we are able to rule out what students want to do and what they don’t want to do in order to create the best experience for everyone!

Thanks Amirah, we love hearing about an exciting event at RSHS. Have a wonderful holiday, let’s keep the spirit going in Term 2!
