This past weekend (August 2-3), our Rototuna Senior High School students achieved something remarkable – they organized and led the largest Model United Nations event in Waikato's history, welcoming 126 high school students from 15 schools across the region 🌟. MUN is an educational simulation where students become international diplomats, debating solutions to real-world global issues 🌍.
What makes this achievement even more special is that this three-year journey began when these students were just starting high school, with no prior experience and plenty of nervous energy 😅.
✨ From Beginners to Leaders
Three years ago, a small group of students and myself (Benny) started a "legacy project." We started from scratch – no experience, no established network, and plenty of uncertainty 🤔. Fast forward to this weekend, and these same students demonstrated poise and diplomatic skills that would impress professionals 👏.
"It is a real joy watching them grow to handle real conflicts and extremely stressful situations with a calmness and real maturity" reflects Benny, highlighting the incredible growth witnessed over these three years 📈.
🎤 Distinguished Guest Speakers Inspire Our Students
The event featured an impressive lineup of guest speakers:
👩💼 Mayor Paula Southgate, sharing insights on local government and community leadership
🏛️ Councillors Sarah Thompson and Tim Macindoe, offering perspectives on regional and international governance
📚 Professor from the School of Law, providing academic insight into international relations
🎓 Dr. Miranda Makin, our Principal, supporting and encouraging our student organizers
💪 Dedication Behind the Scenes
The success didn't happen overnight ⏰. Our organizing team worked tirelessly, often well into many evenings after school, preparing every detail to ensure a seamless experience for all 126 participants. This commitment demonstrates our students' extraordinary dedication to excellence ⭐.
🚀 An Unparalleled Growth and Learning Opportunity
This transformative experience provided our students with life-long skills:
🤝 Conflict resolution – navigating disagreements constructively
👑 Leadership – empowering other students to contribute
🌈 Cultural competency – working respectfully across diverse perspectives
📋 Project management – coordinating large-scale events with multiple stakeholders
🎯 Public speaking – presenting ideas confidently to peers and adults
💝 Community impact – creating something meaningful beyond test scores
The workload was equivalent to preparing for more than 10 major exams 📚, but unlike traditional assessments, their efforts created something tangible while developing real-world skills no textbook could teach 💡.
