KŌRERO FROM MEL

Nau mai, haere mai — a very warm welcome to the 2026 school year!

It has been a joy to see our kura (school) come back to life this week. There is a special energy that fills our spaces when students return, and I have spent much of the last few days enjoying the buzz of catching up with familiar faces and meeting those joining our community for the first time.

Last week, we held our pōwhiri to officially welcome our new students, staff, and their whānau. It was a powerful and moving occasion, grounded in manaakitanga (kindness and respect). Seeing our student leaders and returning students welcome their new peers into our RJHS family reminds me of why our school is such a special place. We are more than just a place of learning; we are a community that looks after one another.

To ensure every student has the best start possible, I want to emphasize the importance of regular attendance. We know that success in our academic programmes, particularly our targeted Numeracy and Writing sessions, is strongly connected to students being present for their learning each day.

Our past success rates in NCEA Numeracy and Literacy Co-requisite examinations, which have been significantly higher than the national average, are a direct result of the hard work students put in while they are here. When students attend school regularly and on time, they not only keep up with their mahi but also maintain those crucial social connections that make school a safe and enjoyable place to be. Your support in prioritizing school attendance is the best way to help your child achieve their future pathways.

We are excited for the year ahead and feel privileged to partner with you in your child’s education.

Nā nui, nā
