KŌRERO FROM MEL
Kia ora e te whānau,
We value the strong relationships we have with our local community, and recently some of our neighbours have shared concerns about our student behaviour in the areas surrounding our kura. These concerns include litter being left behind, disruptive behaviour at the skate park and library, unsafe bike and scooter riding and large numbers of students gathering at Woolworths, Fergy Place after school.
We understand that for many students the supermarket can seem like a convenient place to meet friends or wait to be picked up. However, when large groups gather there it can overwhelm the store and make it difficult for staff and customers to move safely through the space. There have also been recent reports of anti-social behaviours at Woolworths; shopping trolleys being removed from the supermarket grounds, swearing, and negative interactions with members of the community and store staff. These situations can create discomfort for others and place pressure on the businesses and people who share our local neighbourhood.
This is an important reminder that the choices we make beyond the school gates still reflect who we are as a community. Our actions have an impact on others, and part of caring thinking is pausing to consider how what we do affects the people and environment around us.
We ask that whānau take a moment to talk with their young person about being respectful, responsible and mindful when moving through our neighbourhood; looking after shared spaces, acting safely, and treating our neighbours with the same respect we expect within our kura and at home. We will be encouraging students to bypass the front of the store if they are not shopping, and to avoid loitering in and at the front of the store.
By working together, we can strengthen relationships with those around us and continue to show manaakitanga in action.
Thank you for your support.
