KŌRERO FROM MIRANDA

Nau mai hoki mai Rototuna e te Whānau,

Welcome to Week 5, Term 2

Thank you to those who attended our evening last week to find out more about applying for tertiary scholarships. It was a great turnout. On that, I would like to sincerely thank Verity and her team for the amazing work they do supporting our young people planning their pathways.

Recently, there have been a lot of announcements about changes to the education system, many focused on the younger years. However, more recently decisions have been made that will directly affect senior students. Although these changes are a few years off, here are the key details as well as how some of our teaching programmes will be affected.

From 2028 NCEA will be replaced with a new National Qualification

  • If your student is currently in Year 9 they will be entering into this new system in Year 11.

  • From 2028 Year 11 will be recognised by a Foundational Award that will involve numeracy and literacy.

  • From 2029 Year 12 will be recognised by a New Zealand Certificate of Education, NCE.

  • From 2030 Year 13 will be recognised by a New Zealand Certificate of Advanced Education, NCAE.

  • For NCE and NCAE students will need to choose five subjects, with a pass in a minimum of three subjects required to achieve each qualification. Subjects will be graded A+ to E.

Alongside these high level changes the Government has also signalled a drive to achieve a more consistent approach in subjects. The intention is to reduce differences between schools in what is taught in a subject and what is assessed. One consequence of these changes is that we will no longer have the flexibility to connect learning by integrating subject content and assessments. We have made the hard decision not to offer modules next year. Modules have provided us the opportunity to design broad learning experiences connected through subject content, concepts and exciting contexts that brought learning to life. Moving forward, next year our students will continue to be able to choose explore, specialist and mastery level subject learning as we hone our courses to meet new requirements.

As you read through this newsletter you will find reminders about key dates including our teacher only day next Friday 29 May. There are some great features like our student-led Māra Kai projects, Pathways experiences and important assessment information. Until next time.

Ngā manaakitanga,

Miranda
