KŌRERO FROM MIRANDA

Kia ora Rototuna e te Whānau,

As we are moving into the middle of the year and into the colder months sometimes learning can seem harder - especially when we are challenged to learn something new, or to do something different. Sometimes our initial response can be to put up roadblocks as we tell ourselves, “it will take too long, it is too hard, or I will do it later.” It is at times like these, when our young people hit learning roadblocks, they need us by their side.

Learning requires effort and grit, revisiting and practising ideas and skills multiple times. When we learn something new our brain’s wiring undergoes change where neural pathways are formed and strengthened. You can support your student through this productive struggle by helping them to break down large assignments or tasks into smaller, manageable parts they can complete. Other practical tips to keep motivated involve reminding your young person about how completing these small steps moves them closer to their goals and future aspirations. Back at school, teachers can give your student feedback on the steps completed at home. Together we can make a difference.

As you read on in this newsletter, we share more of our Puna Wānanga projects that are making a difference, there is a plea from one of our young drivers about bike and scooter use, and there are some community events that you and families may want to take part in. Until the next newsletter, take care and be safe

Ngā mihi,

Miranda
